APOYO

Allied People Offering Year-Round Outreach

APOYO is known for its service as a food pantry and clothing bank where everyone is welcome. Providing healthy, culturally-relevant food, they also empower people by connecting them with essential services for such things as housing, health care, education, and childcare. Helping people with English and Spanish translation, they can also help families communicate with health care providers, teachers and even find legal assistance

APOYO has been at work in central Washington since the mid-1990s. “APOYO” means “support” in Spanish and for the organization means “Allied People Offering Year-Round Outreach.” They promote community cooperation, provide outreach and advocacy to Latinx communities, act as a liaison between Latinx communities and private and governmental organizations, and help empower Latinx communities to promote, celebrate and honor their diverse cultures and histories in Central Washington and beyond.

APOYO has been at work in central Washington since the mid-1990s. In 1998, CWU president Ivory Nelson gave APOYO permission to operate on campus. In 1999, APOYO was incorporated in Washington State, and, in 2000, obtained 501(C)(3) status. Their food pantry became a joint endeavor between Central’s faculty, the MEChA Club, and the local immigrant community. APOYO offers internships and graduate study opportunities to Central students. Over the years, Central students have contributed thousands of hours of volunteer work.

In 2023 they were awarded a $1 million grant with the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s We Feed WA program, teaming up together to provide emergency food for people experiencing hunger through partnerships with local or regional food producers, farmers and ranchers, processors and distributors, and hunger relief organizations, that serve socially disadvantaged communities.
